You have possibly known that TOEIC is short for Test of English for International Communication. It is an English language test taken by non-native speakers who want to use English in their international workplace. It also allows employers to make hiring decisions, promotions, or transfers depending on job seekers’ qualifications and English language proficiency.
The TOEIC test is a two-hour multiple-choice test consisting of 200 questions evenly divided into Listening Comprehension and Reading Comprehension. Each candidate will receive two independent scores for the listening and reading sections on a scale from 5 to 495 points. The total score adds up to a scale from 10 to 990 points. A reasonable score is about 600 points, a good score is anything above 800 points, and a great score is anything above 900 points.
Before you start studying for the test, the first thing you should do is setting a goal. If you are taking the test in order to apply for a job, find out what proficiency level is required. Next, make sure you understand the format of the TOEIC test. By doing model or practice tests, you will become more familiar with what is tested. Also keep in mind that the TOEIC test has a business theme. You should, therefore, study business-oriented vocabulary taken from such topics as banking, corporate issues, economy, health, restaurants, travel, etc. You may need to learn everyday idiomatic expressions, too.
Presumably, exam preparation is a vital period for candidates who wish to obtain an internationally-recognised certificate. Such candidates will find it less stressful if they can have relevant and beneficial materials in hand. Easy TOEIC is certainly the right choice for you. This is an introductory book which is regarded as the foundation for learners beginning to familiarise themselves with the TOEIC test. It is divided into two chapters: Listening and Reading.
Chapter 1 consists of 12 tests which all have the same format and specifically focus on Parts 3 and 4 of the TOEIC Listening test: conversations and short talks. Every test comprises two conversations and one short talk, and each is followed by a set of three questions for you first to practise doing the test, and then to take dictation. This dictation part aims at helping you not only improve your listening skill but also remember some key vocabulary and structures which are frequently found in the TOEIC Listening actual test.
Chapter 2 provides you with 20 short reading tests of a wide range of topics. You will have a good chance to improve your reading skill and widen your stock of vocabulary that is necessary for doing the TOEIC Reading test. Words and expressions which are used in the reading passages are selectively introduced to draw your attention. You should check their pronunciation and meanings in a good dictionary and then practise putting them in complete sentences as it is generally known that you will only remember new words which you have seen and used in context.
